Oakton to celebrate student achievement at May 16 commencement
(May 12, 2017) Oakton Community College will celebrate commencement at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at the TenHoeve Center, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, recognizing its latest class of certificate and degree earners.
“This is my favorite time of the academic year,” Oakton President Joianne Smith says. “To see so many students overcome great obstacles in their lives to earn a degree and to make a better life for themselves and their families is truly inspirational.”
The college received petitions for 1395 certificates and degrees for summer, fall and spring, including 388 certificates and 1007 degrees. Spring 2017 petitions includes students aged 18 to 67 accumulating 36,553 institutional credit hours at Oakton. One student has attended the college on-and-off since summer 1978.
The spring class includes 198 graduating with honors, and the average grade-point-average for spring petitioners is 3.12.
The ticketed event for family and friends of graduates will be broadcast live on Oakton’s cable channel, aired in Des Plaines, Glenview, Park Ridge and Skokie in addition to streaming on the college’s website.
