Oakton Students Receive Honors Scholars Distinctions

(May 13, 2019) Honors Student of the Year LeiLani Kobzina (Glenview, Denver Colorado High School Charter) and Public Intellectual Award winner Gina Roxas (Skokie, Chicago George Washington High School) were among 14 Oakton Community College students who received recognition as Honors Scholars at a May 3 banquet in Skokie. To receive this distinction on their transcripts, the students were required to complete 18-credit hours of honors-designated courses.

“We are so proud of the incredible accomplishments of our honors students,” said Associate Professor of Anthropology and Sociology Megan Klein, co-coordinator of the program. “Students in the program display a wide range of interests.”

Other students who completed the program include: Chingis Enkhbayar (Des Plaines, Maine East High School), Kainat Ali (Niles, Niles West High School), Allison Wallin (Des Plaines, Maine West High School), April Villalon (Northbrook, Glenbrook North High School), Tsolmon Batbold (Northbrook, Glenbrook South High School), Adrian Carrazco (Des Plaines, Maine West High School), Dominique DiValerio (Park Ridge, Maine South High School), Jacqueline Kaiser (Des Plaines, Maine West High School), Rachel Koshy (Des Plaines, Maine East High School), Joseph Sewall (Glenview, Glenbrook South High School), John Timperley (Park Ridge, Maine South High School) and Julian Zavala (Des Plaines, Maine West High School).

“We are thankful that the Honors Program is supported at every level of the college thus enabling transformative experiences for Oakton students,” Honors co-coordinator and Associate Professor of Philosophy and Humanities Kristin McCartney added.

Designed for students who are especially motivated and intellectually curious, Honors at Oakton offers opportunities for research, seminars, travel and to work closely with dedicated faculty and a motivated peer group. Over the past year, 57 faculty members supported 94 student Honors contracts, and 122 new students were admitted to the program.
